Jacques Sirois – nature writer at Ocean River in Victoria.
I love the ocean, kayaking, looking for wildlife and meeting pleasant characters “out there”. I hope to share my passion and discoveries with you in a new feature – Going Wild in my Kayak – in the Ocean River blog and newsletters. I see Victoria as Canada’s Kayaking Capital and Vancouver Island as its Kayaking [...]
The Victoria Harbour Mega Yacht Marina Saga Update
Despite no approvals from Transport Canada on the Victoria Harbour Airport safety and the with no permit from the Minister of Transport to condone the "substantial interference" to navigation that the proposed marina will create, the BC Government has as of June 23, 2011, offered Community Marine Concepts a lease on the waters that is needed to berth the large vessels on what is now the "non motorized zone " in Victoria Harbour. Developer's cost in initial year $2,400.
Help Camp Thunderbird Get New Kayaks
Camp Thunderbird needs new kayaks to replace some of our older sea kayaks. We take kids out on sea kayak trips of 5 to 29 days every summer and we are in the process of replacing our fleet. We have been given a generous offer by Ocean River Sports, a locally owned and operated outdoor gear store, to help us with the purchase of two kayaks.
Saving the World One Plastic Bag at a Time
Somewhere in mid-April will mark a momentous day at Ocean River. On this day – still unknown – we will give out our last plastic bag. For a few years now Ocean River has been purchasing compostable plastic bags for you to carry your purchases out in. This we feel is an unnecessary step, as although they break down quicker, they still end up (unnecessarily) in the landfill.
Boats on the Colquitz River
I am writing you from the Colquitz River, which meanders down from Elk and Beaver lakes and flows into Portage Inlet, just under the new Admiral’s Street bridge.
This tiny tidal waterway has been traveled frequently by paddlers this past summer and fall, and although we want to share every bit of this beautiful area with you, we ask that you do not enter the river now.
BC Creeks Need Your Help!
Independent Power Projects, aka IPPs, are being planned here in our back yards - and most of us don't have a clue what has been going on. These creeks include: Big Silver, Shovel, Tretheway and Statlu.
There are over 800 applications for Run-of River projects on B.C's creeks and rivers. These are just four. They've been labelled as green energy, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
Necky® Kayaks and Ocean Kayak™ Support Fight Against Breast Cancer
One Percent of Gross Sales on Brand’s Women’s Specific Kayaks Donated To Breast Cancer Fund Old Town, Maine (September 27, 2010) The numbers tell a sobering tale. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. As we head into Breast Cancer Awareness month with [...]
Paddle to the Premier: Stop the Site C Dam
From The Wilderness Committee From the coast to the Kootenays, from Bute Inlet to Glacier-Howser, hundreds of private power projects have been proposed on BC rivers and streams. These projects are environmentally damaging, expensive, and produce energy we don’t need.
