During these scenarios, I become a ‘special’ member of the group, and act out various behaviours to challenge the student who is leading the group. Kayaking and Fitness in the Off-Season

While you can still get out kayaking at this time of year, the ‘off-season’ is a good time to consider starting or restarting an individual conditioning program to increase your fitness and get you ready for next season’s paddling excursions. Kayaking in BC and Ontario

Each fall, on the weekend after Thanksgiving, Ontario hosts the Georgian Bay Storm Gathering, a time for experienced sea kayakers to paddle together in what are expected to be stormy conditions. This year, I was asked to speak at this upcoming event about what it's like to paddle on the West Coast of BC, compared to paddling on the Great Lakes in Ontario. Kayak Fishing Lands the Big Ones!

The fish is a spring salmon that was caught last week off of Neck Point in Nanaimo by Stephen Morgan. It weighed in at over 16 pounds. Caught while trolling using the rod holder and deep line installed in the kayak. As you see from the pictures the modifications have been to add two rod holders, deep line, and have space to place a portable fish finder. The rod holders have to be set forward far enough from the deep line so that you can paddle. Also mounted so that any strike from a large fish would not cause the platform or kayak to pull to the side. The platform will also allow storage of fishing lures, knife, cups, etc without getting in the way of your legs.

Shapely Curves in the Outdoors

It’s got to fit right! For years women suffered the ill fitting design of men’s outdoor clothing when hiking, paddling or playing in the outdoors. The ‘unisex’ design of outdoor clothing was really a modified men’s style and that didn’t fit right for many women. Men don’t have the same shapely curves as women. Women’s hips don’t fit into men’s pants.

Winter Camping on the Wet Coast

By Sarah Duhamel Camping and hiking on Vancouver Island is plentiful during the winter.  The beaches are less populated, the trails less trodden, the coastal storms intriguingly ferocious.
