Kayak Fishing Lands the Big Ones!

The fish is a spring salmon that was caught last week off of Neck Point in Nanaimo by Stephen Morgan. It weighed in at over 16 pounds. Caught while trolling using the rod holder and deep line installed in the kayak. As you see from the pictures the modifications have been to add two rod holders, deep line, and have space to place a portable fish finder. The rod holders have to be set forward far enough from the deep line so that you can paddle. Also mounted so that any strike from a large fish would not cause the platform or kayak to pull to the side. The platform will also allow storage of fishing lures, knife, cups, etc without getting in the way of your legs.

Fishing from a Kayak

I had never been in (on?) a kayak in my life, although my son has been whitewater kayaking for years. My usual comment was along the lines of "I have no intention of being upside down in water with a boat on top." Early this summer I read that kayak fishing has become immensely popular in the US. I picked up an excellent book on the topic (Kayak Fishing - The Ultimate Guide: Heliconia Press, Beachburg, Ontario www.helipress.com) and became intrigued.
